You're More Than Your Jersey Number

Your value does not begin or end with a scoreboard.

This article offers general wellness education, not a diagnosis or treatment. If you need personal support, consider a qualified professional.

The jersey is part of your story, not the whole story

Being an athlete can shape your routine, friendships, confidence, and goals. When you have invested years in your sport, it is natural to feel that your performance says something about who you are. But a missed shot, an injury, or a change in playing time does not change your worth.

Notice the labels you carry

Try finishing this sentence five different ways without mentioning your sport: ‘I am someone who…’ You might be a loyal friend, a curious learner, a sibling, a creator, or a person who keeps showing up for others. Those parts of you matter, too.

Make room for an identity beyond competition

Choose one small activity each week that has nothing to do with training or performance. Read for enjoyment, call someone you miss, cook something new, or explore an interest you put aside. You do not need to be good at it for it to be worthwhile.

Talk about what is hard

If being sidelined or under pressure makes you feel lost, consider talking with a trusted person, coach, campus counselor, or mental health professional. Asking for support is a way of caring for the person behind the jersey.

A question to take with you

If basketball, football, or your sport were not part of the conversation today, what would you want people to know about you? Write down your answer. Keep it somewhere you can return to on difficult days.
