This article provides general wellness education, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. If you are struggling, a qualified professional can help.
Separate your worth from results
A score, starting position, injury, or selection decision can matter deeply without defining who you are.
List your identities
Write five qualities or roles you hold beyond your sport: friend, sibling, learner, creative person, teammate, community member.
Build support outside competition
Stay connected with people who care about you beyond the game. Consider a campus counselor or student-athlete wellbeing service when pressure builds.
Plan for transitions
Injury, graduation, transfers, and changing teams can bring grief and uncertainty. Make room to feel that loss and explore new goals.
Ask a better question
Instead of “What am I worth if I cannot play?”, try “What parts of me remain, whatever happens in sport?”
